Hamilton Area Marinas Receive Accolades from Environment Ministers Federal Environment Minister Stephan Dion and Ontario Minister of Environment Laurel Broten recently presented three Hamilton area marinas with the coveted five-anchor Clean Marine Eco-Rating certificates. The three, Harbour West Marina and La Salle Park Marina, located in Hamilton Harbour and Fifty Point Marina in Winona, also received Clean Marine flags to fly at their marinas, indicating implementation of the highest environmental standards. “Through Project Green, Canada is ensuring that our economic and social progress are linked to the quality of our environment. Canada’s lakes are a vital component of both our natural resources and long-term economic sustainability,” said Environment Minister Stephan Dion. “Through initiatives such as the Clean Marine Program, businesses are contributing to both the health of this national jewel and local economic success.” “Clean Protected lakes and rivers are essential to our environment and equally important to our health, our communities and our economy,” said MOE Minister Laurel Broten. These volunteer efforts to protect Ontario’s most precious natural resources are a great example of how we can all play a part in a cleaner environment.” Since the Clean Marine Eco-Rating Program began in 1990, neither the provincial nor federal minister had ever attended a Clean Marine event; consequently, having both present was quite an accomplishment. Sheelagh Hysenaj, Environment Canada’s representative in the Clean Marine Partnership was responsible for the planning of this special event. The Ontario Marine Operators Association (OMOA) Clean Marine Program now has 11 member marinas with five-anchor ratings. The other eight are Beacon Bay Marina in Penetanguishene, Buckeye Marine and Centre Point Landing Marina in Bobcaygeon, Collin's Bay Marina in Kingston, Hot Knots Landing and Starport Landing in Orillia, Port Elgin Harbour, and South Bay Cove in Honey Harbour. Bob Eaton of the OMOA puts the achievement of five-anchor ratings in perspective, “There are now 230+ marinas in the program, with fewer than 5% reaching this goal. The management and staff of each of these facilities should be proud of their accomplishment.” He adds, “The OMOA enjoys an excellent working relationship with both federal and provincial environment ministries, and together we have created the best marina environmental program anywhere. We have come a long way, but there is much work to be done to improve our air, and ensure our waterways remain the best in the world. The recreational boating industry looks forward to working with government to make this happen.”,
